The Nelson Foundation Scholarship Program

The Nelson Foundation's mission contains a yearly scholarship award for deserving student/students who work to pass on the foundation's message of peace and non-violent conflict resolution.

The foundation's current scholarship recipient is Anna Soman. In 1998, Anna then a senior at Somerville High School, was awarded the first of the foundation's scholarship for her essay on how violence and non-violent conflict resolution has effected her personally. Anna also received a second scholarship from the foundation as a freshman attending The Massachusetts College of Art. This scholarship is based upon her continued relationship with the foundation, and it's message of peace.

The scholarship program is available to any senior in high school. The amount and number of scholarships change yearly. The minimum scholarship awarded is in the amount of $1,000.00.

To apply, the foundation requires a letter of recommendation from the student's guidance councilor, along with the name, address, and phone number of the school. Additionally, the student needs to submit an essay of no more than 1000 words on how violence in the school, or home effects them, and how non-violent conflict resolution can make a difference..

We would also like to know if the applicants would be interested in volunteering some of their time towards foundation endeavors (this does not in any way affect the decision of the scholarship committee).

Submissions must be received by The Nelson Foundation no later than Wednesday, May 31, 2000. Please send them to: The Nelson Foundation, 30 Abbott Street, Newton, MA 02464. Scholarships will be awarded in writing by Friday, June 30, 2000.

The Nelson Foundation committee members, vendors, or immediate family members are not eligible for the scholarship program.
